07 Jun M2 Upgrade
Since the Maslow is now four years old, it’s finally time to do a much needed upgrade. This will also include some additional software/firmware updates and will also include some additional learning (yippee!!). Most likely there will be another learning curve to understand the foibles and quirks related to the new hardware and software.
We purchased the Makermade M2 Z-Axis upgrade kit to hopefully improve the original z-axis motor configuration.
In the original kit, a modification was performed on the worm gear that was first included in the build. The placement of a spacer, to remove the major slack/play when the motor was going up or down, was inserted. This was to help improve the accuracy of the cut depth, but it then needed an additional fix with the placement of a bungee to help hold the router down more when it was changing the cut depth. Not a really elegant solution, but it did a pretty good job for what it was.
The M2 is a considerably more robust frame work and utilizes a purely vertical movement using a belt drive.
We thought that the original sled would be used as the mounting, but were surprised to also receive the new sled for the gantry. This also created some additional thought to go into the changing of bits and the dust collection while cutting.
